At the beginning of the Monitor phase, the production is handed over from R&D to Manufacturing. In this phase, user, customer and stakeholder satisfaction will be verified. It requires validating the capability at high volume for the regular production organization and measuring the user and customer satisfaction. After a positive evaluation, the milestone ‘release for mass production’ can be passed and the R&D project can be closed.
Feedback of performance in industrial phase to R&D
In many companies, there is poor feedback from Manufacturing to R&D. Engineers hardly know how their design performs during production with the risks that imperfections from the present design are copied into the next design. In the DfSS approach, the R&D engineers are asked to evaluate:
- the capability of the CTQ’s and other critical parameters, using the Process Capability Study technique,
- the yield of the productions line using the Rolled Throughput Yield technique and
- the product reliability.
Moreover the first feed-back of the customers and users is evaluated end reported to marketing and R&D. In this way, R&D can summarize the lessons learnt during the project and allow others to learn from their efforts
At the project closure it is checked whether the product and process design knowledge is documented, all standard procedures are in place, process control and quality assurance is implemented, and whether the manufacturing staff has been trained. The last DfSS activity is the sign-off of the project by the appropriate people.
The evaluation of the performance during the industrial phase is reported with amongst others statistical techniques. CQM contributes to reporting tools, templates and formats.
